“Wheats Kings” was released in 1992 on The Tragically Hip’s “Full Completely” album. The song tells the story of one of Canada’s darkest moments in its history, as 17 year old David Milgaard was wrongly convicted of the brutal rape and murder of 21 year old Gail Miller. Through a shady conviction, Milgaard served over 23 years in prison before finally being released in 1997 when DNA evidence proved his innocence. Although physically free, the ordeal took a psychological toll on David. His recovery and reconciliation process was long and difficult. Its early stages included a 1993 trip to meet The Tragically Hip and hear "Wheat Kings" played live for, and dedicated to, David Milgaard. While most Canadian lawmakers and politicians try to forget about this part of Canadian history, The Tragically Hip feels that this story should be known and told.
