On February 12, 2008, Hall was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, in November 2018 Hall and his wife Dixie Hall were inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame, and on June 13, 2019, Hall was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

This song was also recorded by Bobby Bare on his 1970 album This Is Bare Country. Bobby Bare's version spent 16 weeks on the Hot Country Songs charts, peaking at number 3. It's been covered by many others including Roseanne Cash and Eric Church. The Avett Brothers covered the song in the 2013 concert film Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating the Music of Inside Llewyn Davis, a concert inspired by the Coen Brothers' film, 'Inside Llewyn Davis,' which is set in the 1960s Greenwich Village folk music scene, featuring live performances of the film's music, as well as songs from the early 1960s.
