"La rue principale" is a song by Quebec band Les Colocs about what happens when a small town is overcome by heartless business development. The upbeat melody is fun, but the alternately nostagic and humorous lyrics raise awareness about the urban erosion that many small to medium municipalities face. The beloved village in turmoil that André Fortin sings about is Normandin, where he grew up. He studied film at Université de Montréal, and his impressively original music video for La rue principale (1995) is one of the first produced in Quebec that used animation so prominently. Show and animated in only 4 days by Fortin and his crew, it's an ideal vehicle to convey the party atmosphere of Les Colocs' 1993 debut album. La rue principale won the 1995 Félix Award for Best Music Video.
